Time to Pass Child Nutrition Legislation
Give a big hurrah to congressman George Miller, chair of the house Education and Labor Committee, who achieved passage of his Improving Nutrition for America’s Children Act (H.R. 5504), which is set for consideration by the House of Representatives.
The bill includes a landmark provision to get soda and junk food outof school vending machines, which has universal support from parents, health groups, and major food and beverage companies. The bill provides resources and training to improve the nutritional quality of school lunches, expands nutrition education for children, and strengthen school nutrition and physical activity wellness policies.
The next step is to urge the Senate to pass its child nutrition bill, the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act
(S. 3307), which passed unanimously out of the Senate Agriculture Committee in March, but is waiting to be schedule for a vote by the Senate floor.
For Your Kids Sake–Call your members of congress and urge them to pass R. F5504 and S 3307. There is less than three weeks left until Congress heads home for their summer recess, and then they’ll return to DC at the onset of campaign season. We need to make our children’s health their next priority. Tell them to push for vote in favor of improved child nutrition today.
